We are trying our best so that we can make the Jammu city a smart city soon. This was informed by Commissioner Jammu Municipal Corporation, Ramesh Kumar during his exclusive interaction with the Young Bites.

VG: What efforts have been taken by the JMC to make Jammu a smart city?
RK: To make the Jammu a smart city is main motive, in this regard many big projects has been taken up by the JMC. We are trying our best so that all these projects should be completed in time.
In this regard I took a review meeting of the Engineering Wing wherein a detailed functioning of ongoing works was discussed.
While reviewing the progress on various fronts, I stressed upon timely completion of works under various heads viz. IHHL, Plan, Non-Plan, CDF etc and further asked the Engineering Wing of JMC to complete the developmental works on war footing.
I have further directed the Joint Commissioner (W) to personally monitor all the works being carried out by JMC under different schemes, especially the mega projects and flagship programmes, and also directed to furnish the list of all the works including their status. He was further directed to expedite the issuance of tender on time bound basis in respect of works administratively approved.
VG: Time to time JMC launches anti-encroachment drives, but still lot has to be done, why?
RK: It is true that from time to time we launched anti-encroachment drives. These drives are launched by Jammu Municipal Corporation & Police in compliance to the Orders of Division Bench of Hon’ble High Court in WPPIL no. 27/2017 titled COURT ON ITS OWN MOTION V/S STATE OF J&K &Ors., dated 28/03/2018. In this regard a drive was conducted in the areas like Gandhi Nagar, Apsara Road & Last Morh in order to ease traffic congestions and ensure free movement of pedestrians on footpaths.
During the drive, the special squad of Jammu Municipal Corporation seized four trucks of material like counters, and other material displayed by the shopkeepers in front of their shops and footpaths causing traffic congestions and free flow of pedestrians.
The team also lifted illegal rehries and removed unauthorized hoardings/flexes from these areas. The enforcement team of JMC also dismantled cemented Tharas and two number of illegal walls creating obstructions in free movement of vehicles as well as pedestrians. Moreover 25 no. of vehicles were challaned by Traffic Police for violating traffic rules by parking their vehicles on the roads causing traffic congestion in the above said area.
Jammu Municipal Corporation has being repeatedly issuing strict instructions to the shopkeepers regarding removal of encroachments by shopkeepers through public notices. 233 no. of notices have been served in the areas like Hari Market, Indira Chowk, Canal Road, Jewel, Vinayak Bazar, Below Gumat, Gandhi Nagar, Talab Tillo,Gole Pully, Patta Chungi, Bohri, Poonch House, Vikram Chowk by JMC to shopkeepers violating rules by displaying their goods beyond the shutter line of their shops.
Action shall be initiated against the defaulters/encroachers in terms of Section 232 of the Municipal Corporation Act, 2000 which may further lead towards the sealing of the shops as per law. Strict instructions were also issued to the street vendors/phari walas to ply their rehries only in the rehri zones established by Jammu Municipal Corporation. Such type of drives shall continue in near future also.
