New Delhi, Jan 9 The maiden sea trials in August last year were to establish propulsion, navigational suite and basic operations. India's first indigenous aircraft carrier IAC Vikrant has set sail for the third phase of sea trials that will involve complex manoeuvres to establish specific readings of how the ship performs in various conditions, the Indian Navy said. The maiden sea trials in August last year were to establish propulsion, navigational suite and basic operations. The second sea trial in October-November witnessed the ship being put through machinery trials and flight trials. The ship, in fact was out for 10 days, proving its sustenance in the very second sortie. Various seamanship evolutions were also successfully cleared during the second sortie. Having gained adequate confidence in the ship’s abilities, the IAC now sails to undertake complex manoeuvres to establish specific readings of how the ship performs in various conditions. Scientists from the Naval Science and Technological Laboratory, a DRDO laboratory based at Visakhapatnam, would also be involved during the trials. In addition, various sensor suites of the ship would also be tested. The development comes after two successive high profile visits by the President and Vice President of India within a span of less than two weeks. Both dignitaries, having reviewed the progress, conveyed their satisfaction and expressed their best wishes to all the stakeholders involved in the project. The mammoth war ship that will be called INS Vikrant is the Indian Navy’s first Made-in-India aircraft carrier. It is expected to be commissioned by August this year. This takes India into a select band of seven countries — the US, the UK, France, Russia, Italy and China which have niche capabilities for designing and building an Aircraft Carrier. The Indian navy's previous aircraft carriers were acquired from the UK and Russia. That the ship has been able to carry out basic flying operations from its very first sortie itself is a landmark in Indian warship construction history, the navy said. The Indigenous Aircraft Carrier- Vikrant is 262 metre long, 62 metre at the widest part and depth of 30 metre minus the superstructure. There are 14 decks in all, including five in the superstructure. The ship has over 2,300 compartments, designed for a crew of around 1,700 personnel, including specialised cabins to accommodate women officers when embarked. The ship's top speed is around 28 knots and cruising speed, 18 knots. With an endurance of 7,500 nautical miles, she can almost cover the entire coastline of India twice without any requirement for refuelling.
