T K NANDANAN Coronavirus cases are climbing everywhere in the world frightening the already distraught people. New coronavirus infections in South Korea exceeded 4,000in a day for the first time since the start of the pandemic as a Delta-driven spread continues to rattle the country after it eased social distancing in recent weeks to improve its economy. Coronavirus also tightened its grip on Europe as the third wave of outbreak of the pandemic has just begun with the onset of winter. As a result, the entire Europe is put under partial lockdown in order to contain the pandemic. With pandemic cases mounting and threatening to overwhelm health care capacity, much of Europe has taken similar measures to curb human contacts. All restaurants, bars, gyms, and theaters in Europe’s largest economy are ordered to be shut in a new bid to halt the spread of Covid-19. For now, Europe appears to be stuck in the lockdown imposed in an apparent bid to prevent further escalation of the pandemic. In what was considered being a lull in the summer, the Covid-19 pandemic came back with a bang giving nightmare to the people of Europe in the winter. Thankfully, the hope is that booster doses have just started being rolled out to ward off the pandemic. In light of the third wave of the Covid-19 pandemic raging across Europe, India has to be very cautious about its presence in the country especially when the winter is sweeping across the country. It may be noted that Europe is the grip of winter now and this chilly climate may have escalated the already corona-affected situation in the continent. It is pertinent to note that Jammu & Kashmir is a colder region and there is a chance of virus lingering in the air in the droplets released either through coughing or sneezing. Such virus released will have more increased life in the colder regions than in the hotter regions. So, health experts will have to take this aspect also into their consideration when measures are taken to fight the pandemic. At this juncture, it is to be remembered what Donald Trump once said in this connection, “Coronavirus has less chance of surviving in a warm and humid environment as opposed to cold and dry weather where it stays put.” Backing Trump, Bill Bryan, the head of the science and technology directorate at Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said, “Coronavirus dies at a much more rapid pace when exposed to sunlight and humidity. Further, the virus dies the quickest in direct sunlight. Isopropyl alcohol will kill the virus in 30 seconds.” Jammu and Kashmiris a colder region with less amount of sunlight sans much heat. So, people have to take extra precaution to stave off the pandemic during the winter.
