AYURVEDA FOR GOUT: EXCELLENT NATURAL REMEDIES

Amongst the myriad ailments plaguing the bones and joints such as osteoarthritis, osteoporosis and rheumatoid arthritis, gout is yet another condition that affects a significant number of adult men and women. A very commonly occurring ailment, gout, also termed gouty arthritis, is a disorder wherein joint pain, swelling, inflammation and kidney malfunction arise owing to excessive deposits of uric acid crystals. Under normal situations, the body produces compounds known as purines, that are also present in some food and drink items, which is broken down into uric acid – a chemical component. Being an additional byproduct, the majority of uric acid dissolves in the blood, is filtered by the kidneys and is eliminated via urine. However, when uric acid waste residues accumulate in the body, they begin to crystallise and deposit in the bones, joints and kidneys, triggering gout. Ayurveda defines gout as “Vata Rakta”, meaning a disease that develops from vitiated vata doshas (bodily energy composed of air elements) and rakta dhatu (blood tissues). Due to uric acid surplus, the flow of vata is obstructed in the blood, which manifests in the form of swollen joints, particularly in the big toes in the feet. Gout also induces inflammation in the knees, ankles, feet, hands, elbows and other joints in the body, leading to arthritis, besides prompting kidney stones and damage to renal tissues.
