T K NANDANAN An intriguing political swapping took place on Saturday between Canada and China, the second and third largest countries in the world. The apparent swap also brings to an end a damaging diplomatic row between Beijing and the West. One of the persons included in the swapping is none other than Ms. Meng Wanzhou, daughter of Ren Zhengfei, the billionaire founder of Chinese telecoms giant Huawei. Meng is the wealthiest business entrepreneur and was the most popular Woman Entrepreneur in the analyses of Forbes. Ren Zhengfei was the founder of Huawei technologies with a net worth of 1.3 billion in the analysis of Forbes in 2018. Meng holds the post of Chief Financial Officer in Huawei Technologies of Canada. It is pertinent to note that she allegedly misled HSBC about the business dealing of Huawei Technologies and hence she was arrested. Meng spent three years of house arrest in Canadaand was eventually freed on Saturday after the Chinese government readied to free two jailed Canadians, whom China accused of espionage denying detaining them was in retaliation for Meng’s arrest. Thus, ending the political drama, Meng headed home from Vancouver on Saturday as two Canadians were released from prison in China ending a bitter diplomatic row that has poisoned ties for three years. Huawei’s successful journey as one of the world’s biggest telecommunication companies has recently met with an unexpected turn of events. One of the major technology-related pieces of news of 2019 was that the United States banned Huawei from any 5G related deployment within its borders, which was eventually expanded to a total US ban on trade with Huawei and 70 affiliated Chinese companies. To make matters even worse for Huawei, Google announced that it would stop Android services and updates on Huaweimade phones. This caused Huawei to release its own in-house operating system for smart phones and smart devices called ‘Harmony OS. The hard truth was that America found out Huawei was a national security concernfor the rest of the world as Huawei has the ability with its ties to the Chinese Communist Party and People’s Liberation Army to use its control over telecommunications infrastructure to intercept data from individuals, corporations and government. It has also the ability to facilitate intellectual property theft and cyber espionage. With the US coming out to lash at the Huawei’s hidden agenda, there was a sudden shift of countries from depending on Huawei for technological cooperation for 5G network as Huawei is the leading technological giant in 5G technology. The 5G is the next-generation newest wireless networking technology that phones, smart watches, cars and who knows what else, will use in the coming years. The 5G is widely believed to be smarter, faster and more efficient than the 4G. With speed up to 100 gigabits per second, the 5G is set to be as much as 100 times faster than the 4G. Implementing the 5G technology will help integrate highresolution- video services streaming in 4K and5K, which need substantial amounts of bandwidth.
