Amidst the second wave of COVID infections throughout the country, India has surpassed every other nation in terms of the average daily surge in newly reported cases. However, it has managed to sustain at the second spot beneath the US in terms of the overall reported cases till date. As India attempts to drop down in this list, it has struggled to do so, specifically because of a select few states. The majority of the new COVID infections throughout the country have been reported in its metropolitans. It is primarily due to the enormous population housed at these locations complied with the immense economic and social activities which have propagated yet again after the opening up of economic and other activities post the announcement of India’s unlock during the last year. However, there are few aspects concerning the new surge in COVID cases. The disparity in the rise of reported positive cases is somewhat sceptical for the layman to think about, or even worse, to analyse it. While the surge in the prime economic and financial hubs of India is totally understandable, one persistently fails to understand the lack of such a remarkably high rise in reported infections in other prominent locations with significant populations. Recent election campaigns in the state of West Bengal witnessed enormous gatherings for the political campaigns, rallies and other celebrations. However, surprisingly enough, the rise in COVID positive infections reported from the state hasn’t witnessed any significant or even anywhere near the equating numbers given the massive crowds which should’ve resulted otherwise. Apparently, it sends a signal that COVID is not such a concern against political happenings. Another case maybe is that of the Kumbh. While we’re constantly staying cautioned about the surge in cases amidst this wave of infections, the government is also making preparation for Kumbh, the largest human gathering on planet Earth. It puts up a genuine question in everyone’s mind: if COVID is not a concern against political or religious happenings, why is it such a huge concern when it comes to economic activities and the daily movement of life? In no way or form am I neglecting the importance of COVID protocols. I’m simply emphasizing the concerns of the everyday person, the ones who earn just enough to sustain a hand to mouth survival. Restraining public activities with lockdown is not the option now. A huge section of society will have to suffer economic brutality yet again if this happens.
