As we exit this pandemic…

Over the past year or so, India has stood second only to the US concerning the number of reported COVID-19 infections. We also witnessed the second-highest number of death due to COVID although the overall mortality rate stood at an unexpected lower rate, especially when compared to that of the global average or that in the numerous developed nations with far more supreme medical facilities and infrastructure. After going through a tough phase given the effects on livelihood and economy for the people and the government, things have slowly started to restart and resume like the actual normal, giving a glimpse of hope to everyone. All of this, further pushed by the recent vaccination drive initiated by the government. Apparently, the old fear of infection does not persist in most people as of date, which may be due to the mild nature of infection experienced by a majority of the population in our nation. However, this should undermine the lethality of this disease which managed to disrupt the entirety of mankind for more than a year, also claiming lives in millions around the globe at supposedly such a modern age. Though it might not have been severe for quite a few within the population, it did claim itself as deadly for many unfortunate victims. We should not forget that the count of reported cases, though relatively less in number, still manages to persist around while claiming several lives daily. Learning a lesson from the events of the COVID pandemic, the world realised the value of real freedom, the importance of social interaction and a social environment necessary to maintain a stable physical as well as psychological balance for an individual. I don’t think we understand such importance unless we’re denied and deprived of it. It will surely bring about a certain change in the thoughts of the various generations who experienced the unfolding of this pandemic, some good, some bad, making the two sides of the coin, as always.
