KINSHUK SAFAYA Winters are here and so are the DDC elections in the newly formed union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. India has entered its eighth decade of independence and it must be almost impossible to believe that people are still, for some reason or the other reluctant to go out in the open and cast their vote for the candidate that they feel can probably improve the locality that they live in and improve their constituency in general. There is not much to separate from what the people of Kashmir and Jammu want for themselves and what they actually get considering how they have been pushed against the fence and always neglected because of the lack of choice that they had while the articles 370 and 35-A were in place in the valley in Jammu district and Ladakh as well. Having said that, it is a welcome news that about 52% of the voters cast their votes on the first day of the elections which happened on the Saturday, that is 28th of November 2020 In various districts of Jammu and also in certain districts of Kashmir given the harsh weather conditions because of the chilai-kalan. The elections are said to take place in eight phases(43 constituencies) and will conclude on the December 19. The counting will begin on the December 22 which will further decide the fate of 296 candidates. According to the Doda District development Commissioner people started coming in Bhalessa and Changa DDC constituencies where people started to come at around 7 AM and enthusiastic participation was seen all along. KK Sharma, the state election commissioner stated that in the 20 districts of Jammu and Kashmir the DDC is being constituted in every district and 14 representatives will be elected. As per the figures given by the office of state election commissioner, in Kashmir Division, Kupwara has recorded voting percentage of 13.49%, Bandipora 17.87%, Baramulla 12.19%, Ganderbal 23.14%, Srinagar 10.641 per cent, Budgam 28.47%, Pulwama 3.51%, Shopian 29.341%, Kulgam 14.91% and Anantnag 23.46% till 11am. In the Jammu division the voting percentage was said to be 64.2% and Kashmir division, voting percentage was said to be 40.65% as said by KK Sharma, the state election commissioner which was reported by ANI. “After 70 years, DDC elections are taking place in Jammu and Kashmir. Due to Article 370, DDC elections could not be held. People of Jammu and Kashmir are enthusiastic about the democratic system and are happily taking part in the elections.” ~Union minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi Considering the overall situation which was under control in the Kashmir division apart from one incident that happened at the polling booth in CR Pora of Kulgam district where some miscreants pelted stones at the polling booth a voter was injured, everything else remained calm just like the wintery dusk. An FIR was also registered in the same matter as said by Vijay Kumar: IG Kashmir. All in all, to sum up the entire scenario that panned out in Kashmir and in Jammu division today, it would not be wrong to say that people have been really happy with the way the election conducting body and the government have actually put their foot down, reinforced its self and taken a stand for the people since it’s their government; which actually is what is the true meaning of democracy in India which stands for- ‘of the people, for the people, and by the people.’
