New Delhi, Sep 22 Delhi Capitals captain Shreyas Iyer clarified his comments on head coach Ricky Ponting and former mentor Sourav Ganguly which he made before his team's first match against Kings XI Punjab on Sunday. During the toss, Iyer had praised Ponting and Ganguly for helping him as a captain which confused the fans and pundits as the former India stalwart is no longer associated with DC due to the conflict of interest issue. Ganguly was the Delhi Capitals mentor in the 2019 season in which Iyer led the team to the playoffs for the first time in 6 years. It was the first full season for Iyer as the team captain. "I have learnt to take some responsibility, with the likes of Ponting and Ganguly, it makes my task a bit easier," Iyer had said at the toss in DC's first game. But he issued a clarification on Twitter, saying that he was merely emphasising his "gratitude" towards the two legends. "As a young captain, I am thankful to Ricky and Dada for being a part of my journey as a cricketer and captain last season. My comment yesterday was to emphasise my gratitude towards the role they both have played in my personal growth as a captain," Iyer tweeted. Delhi Capitals opened their IPL 2020 campaign with a Super Over win against Kings XI Punjab in Dubai. The match saw both teams tied on 157 for 8 in their allotted 20 overs after which DC restricted KXIP to 2 for 2 in the Super Over. They knocked off the target in 2 deliveries to go second on the points table but later dropped to third after Royal Challengers Bangalore's.
