Contrary to the tall claims and assurances given by different political parties to improve sanitary conditions of GMC hospital Jammu every effort proved to be a futile exercise. Different organisations expressed serious concern over the pitiable and miserable condition prevailing in Govt Medical College Jammu. It is in shambles and patients coming here for the treatment are facing many problems as far as basic facilities are concerned. The unhygienic conditions have created health hazards in the Hospital as garbage remains scattered every where and the patients going there for treatment apprehend that instead of getting treated they may be caught by other serious infections.
One gets shocked and stunned over the lack of proper sanitation facility in Government Medical College (GMC) and Hospital, Bakshi NagarJammu. GMC Hospital which usually is overcrowded and saw pitiable condition of the bathrooms, toilets, hand-wash basins, which are not properly cleaned. Patients and their attendants expressed their concern and deep anguish over the miserable and poor condition of GMC Hospital, Jammu. General masses expressed displeasure over the poor sanitation in the hospital including the condition of wash rooms, beds, bedding and other material and asked govt to direct the concerned to take effective measures to make the environment clean and hygienic. Different ruling parties failed ,specially in the Health and Medical Department.
Hospitals are generally meant for cleanliness and for curing the patients, he said adding that such dilapidated and pitiable condition of the hospital is adding woes and miseries of the people especially the patients, attendants and even the doctors and hospital staff who are serving in such unhygienic conditions. State Government should take necessary remedial steps for cleanliness of the bathrooms, toilets, hand-wash basins of Government Medical College Hospital, Government really needs to focus and improve the sanitation system in the hospitals.
it is not just medicines which heal the sick, but the environment too had a major role for the recovery of the patient but it is unfortunate that the city’s main government hospital GMC(Bakshinagar jammu) where a number of patients come for the treatment is in a pathetic condition. Government Medical College & Hospital Jammu has failed to look after the sanitation of the hospital and associated institutions which are in shamble conditions. Emergency Wing of the hospital caters to thousands of patients from across the state every day, but when it comes to the sanitation, there is lot to be desired. The bathrooms in the hospital are overflowing with sewage, and dirty water. The pipes are leaking, the faucets do not work, and toilets have foul smell as if these have not been cleaned for years”
The institute needs to take a cue from its counterparts in the private sector as far as matters of cleanliness and hygiene are concerned or go over to a military hospital to find an example to emulate. Patients and their caretakers as such are facing tough time particularly in the Emergency ward of the Government Medical College & hospital due to poor maintenance of the toilets. The government really needs to improve the hygienic conditions not only of GMC&H Jammu but other government hospitals in the state as well. Govt should ask the doctors about the status of the patients and must instruct the Hospital authorities and Doctors to provide every required medical facility to the patients so that they do not feel any inconvenience and should wish for early recovery of the patients. The poor sanitary conditions in Governent Medical college and hospital is making life difficult for the patients, and their caretakers.
As thousands of people from across the Jammu province make a beeline to avail medical facilities. The patients at the hospital particularly from weaker sections of society are faced with poor upkeep of wards. The corridors and floors in wards, particularly the emergency wards of the hospital are littered. The toilets in the entire hospital are in shambles, and have not been cleaned it seems for ages. While the hospital authorities use their own toilets, it’s the public toilets which are in worst condition, and people have to bear the problem despite the fact that it could lead to spread of deadly germs and bacteria leading to deadly infectious diseases.
In fact the visitors to the hospital allege that garbage removal is also done sparingly, and even before the floors are cleaned they get littered up. Poor patients from rural areas assert that conditions are quite unhygienic and despite complaints no action has been taken by the authorities. While the officials claim that there is shortage of staff but patients say that government must come up with a solution because if action is not taken soon thing will soon go out of hand and poor will be doomed. Emergency ward to relieve themselves as they cannot afford to stand even for few seconds in the unhygienic toilets. The washbasins and sinks of the toilets are always filled with unhygienic stuff and urinals are also in a bad condition. This poses a
serious threat to the health of thousands of people visiting the emergency ward of the hospital every day.
The Emergency ward also presents a picture of chaos and confusion due to rush of patients attendants. The hospital authorities have failed to regulate the number of attendants accompanying each patient resulting in heavy rush of caretakers in the emergency wing of the hospital. The hospital authorities have been facing dearth of sanitary staff in the
hospital premises and in view of this, they have started outsourcing for the same who must come forward with a better solution to this problem. Thet effective measures must be taken to improve the health condition in the hospitals of the State. The administration is doing only paper work to resolve the problems but nothing on the ground has been done.
