STOP FURTHER DEVELOPING NUCLEAR MISSILES BY CHINA

T K NANDANAN It is indeed disturbing to learn that China has been developing more nuclear missiles and adding them to their armoury to become the superpower of the world in terms of weaponry. There are already more than enough nuclear weapons stacked upon the face of the earth to destroy it again and again. Then what is the use of addingmore nuclear weapons to the existing ones? It is a colossal waste of zillions of money. Yes, NATO leaders on Monday said China poses a major security challenge and is working to undermine global order and they are worried how fast the Chinese are developing nuclear missiles. Recalling the horrid memories of the past Cold war between Eastern bloc (Warsaw Pact) under the erstwhile Soviet Union and Western bloc (NATO) under the US, NATO leaders now find China as a possible threatening nation in place of Soviet Union. However, the Warsaw Pact was declared at an end on February 25, 1991 and the Czechoslovak President, Vaclav Havel, formally declared an end to it on July 1, 1991 following Soviet Union’s political turmoil. Later, the Soviet Union disintegrated and split into 15 independent countries on December 31, 1991. It may be recalled that Gorbachev’s policy of Glasnost and Perestroika paved the way for popular uprisings, and as a result, communist governments in Poland, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Romania and Bulgaria started to fall. Thus, the Warsaw Pact became defunct. Meanwhile, China is believed to have stepped into the place from where the erstwhile Soviet Union had left. And now China and Pakistan continue to have more nuclear weapons than India. Pakistan has165 nuclear warheads against 156 with India. Further, according to a report by Stockholmbased thinktank SIPRI, India, China and Pakistan continued to grow their nuclear arsenal in the region in 2020 and that China has modernised and expanded of its nuclear arsenal causing India and Pakistan to increase nuclear weapon inventories. Considering this stockpiling of nuclear arsenal, the situation is very serious and volatile and it is for the undoing for the region as well. After all, it will accelerate cold war in the region. In the post Covid era, when the US downed with rampant spread of Covid-19 pandemic and millions are reported to have been tested Covid positive, China has literally stepped into the shoes of the US to take control of the world. In their bid to remain top ruling the world, China needs comfort at home and also peace with its neighbours like India. This is the reason why China does not like to wage war with India. Admittedly, China has achieved tremendous progress over the years and to say that China has become a super power would certainly be an understatement. Domineering nature has embedded their psyche and so they have got too big for their boots. When domineering nature overtakes a country, then automatically expansionism and imperialism come uncalled. China’s expansionist nature was well evident in the recent boundary issue with India in the eastern Ladakh. Also, their imperialistic attitude is also exposed in the Hong Kong and Taiwanese cases In short, the best way to subdue an authoritarian regime that has expansionist attitude is to unite by all other nations and impose economic embargo on China. Surely and ultimately, authoritarian regime like the country of China will yield to the collective might of other nations.
