Tonk, June 3 Even as long queues can be seen outside vaccination centres in big cities in Rajasthan, vaccine hesitancy is a real thing in the rural hinterlands of the desert state. India Today visited a village in Rajasthan's Tonk district, hardly 95 kilometres away from the state capital Jaipur. Here, a rumour that spread like wildfire led to most people dropping their vaccine plans. Several men believed that vaccination against Covid-19 could led to impotency or 'losing their manhood' as some stated. Other rumours surrounding the jab was it could cause weakness and even death in a span of two years. India Today spoke with the Sarpanch, who stated that the apprehensions against vaccination were real and palpable. "Before the second wave hit, there was the fear that vaccine against Covid19 can cause loss of manhood, can also lead to weakness as well. There was also a very strong rumour that if one gets vaccinated, then that person can die in a span of 2 years," Roopnarayan, Village Sarpanch, stated to India Today. "People in the age group of 18 to 44 were keen on getting vaccinated but those above 45 were cynical. They felt that vaccination can kill them," Radhakishan Yadav, a Panchayat member, said. However, things started taking a turn as the second wave of Corona caused a large number of deaths, which led to people from this village scurrying for the vaccine. "When people got to know about deaths happening around them, their mindsets towards vaccines started changing. We also made an effort to educate and make people aware," Badrilal Choudhary, Principal, Government school, mentioned to India Today. India Today spoke with some of the villagers who maintained that around 60 % to 70% people in the above-45 age group did not get themselves vaccinated when they had an opportunity to do so because of the fear factor. "Several people wanted to see what happens to the others post-vaccination and wait it out because of the fear factor," a villager said to India Today. "I got both jabs of the vaccine but I know of several villagers who did not get a single dose because of apprehensions. Several believed that they could die within a span of 2 years if they took it.
