Term Covid 'natural calamity': Maha CM urges PM, says state will see 11.9 lakh active cases by April-end

Mumbai, Apr 15 Maharashtra alone could have 11.9 lakh active cases of Covid-19 by the end of April, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray said in a letter to PM Narendra Modi. The state has 5.64 lakh active cases, almost 88 per cent more than the previous peak in September, wrote CM Thackeray. "As you are aware, in the first peak during September 2020, the entire country had 10.5 lakh active Covid-19 patients as peak caseload whereas based on current projections and highly transparent testing Maharashtra state alone could have 11.9 lakh cases by 30th April at the current growth rate," the Chief Minister said. The state of Maharashtra reported nearly 59,000 new confirmed cases of infection on Wednesday. As per the state government's health department, the pandemic has claimed 58,804 lives in Maharashtra alone. In light of the second wave of infections, the state government has imposed strict restrictions for a period of 15 days to break the chain of transmission. In his letter, the Maharashtra Chief Minister also requested the central government to consider declaring Covid-19 pandemic
