5 arrested for killing 75-year-old man over suspicion of practicing sorcery

Bhubaneswar, Apr 12 Five persons were nabbed in Odisha's Ganjam district on Saturday for allegedly killing an elderly man on suspicion of practicing sorcery at the Dhimiripankal village. The incident took place last week at Dhimiripankal village which comes under Badagada police station limits. The four accused were identified as Bulu Naik, Budhiram Naik, Rohit Naik, Dhoba Naik and another Das Naik. The incident came to light after the police recovered the body of the deceased, Dharma Naik, 75, from bushes near the village canal. "The accused have confessed to the crime and a case has been registered against them under Section 302 of IPC," Ganjam Police SP Brijesh Kumar Rai told India Today. Police also seized a stone, hammer, mobile phone and two motorcycles from the accused, he added. "One of the accused had lost two of his children within a span of a few months and suspected that something was unnatural. They had seen Dharma throw some substance right outside his house twice every week for the last couple of weeks, and he grew suspicious that Dharma was involved in the death of his children," the police officer said.
