New Delhi, Feb 25 Desertions and defections have cost the Congress possibly the most in India compared to any other party. The latest loss to the Congress due to desertions and defections happened in Puducherry, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed an election rally on Thursday for the BJP, emphasising that the Congress is losing ground very fast across the country. The Congress lost power in Puducherry after six ruling coalition MLAs resigned bringing the V Narayanasamy government to minority. One Congress MLA had been disqualified last year over anti-party activities. Three of the defectors have already joined the BJP. More are likely to follow before the Puduchery Assembly election. The BJP, which had not won a single seat in the 2016 polls, is likely to be a force in the upcoming Puducherry election. All the turncout MLAs are likely to contest on BJP tickets. Here, the BJP is trying to build a case against the Congress. Loss of Puducherry has made entire South India Congress-mukt for the moment. The BJP has been trying to convey after the Puducherry fall that the Congress is organisationally so weak that it cannot even hold back MLAs who people elect in elections. Defection happened so close to the due Puducherry Assembly election that an alternative government could not be formed.
