Bhopal, Nov 30 Protem Speaker of the Madhya Pradesh Assembly and BJP MLA from Bhopal Huzur, Rameshwar Sharma, has demanded renaming of the historic Idgah Hills after Guru Nanak on his 551st birth anniversary. “Guru Nanak Dev ji had come to Bhopal about 500 years ago, a Gurdwara named Guru Nanak Dev Gurdwara Tekri Sahib is located at the spot. When Guru Nanak Ji came to Bhopal there must have been a forest there so why is the area called Idgah Hills? It should instead by Guru Nanak Dev Tekri,” Rameshwar Sharma said after attending an event at the Tekri Sahib Gurdwara. Idgah Hill is a prominent locality in Bhopal and is named after the Eidgah mosque where Muslims hold their annual Eid and Bakar Eid Namaz congregations. It is believed that Guru Nanak Dev during his visit to Bhopal about 500 years ago had stayed on the hill and cured leprosy patients. According to legends, initially there was cave with a stone roof at the spot where a gurdwara was built later, which is now known as Gurdwara Tekri Sahib. As the protem Speaker demanded the renaming of Idgah Hills, opposition Congress hit out at the BJP accusing the ruling party of indulging in politics over Guru Nanak. “Guru Nanak Ji is one of the most revered and anything that shows respect to him is welcome, but this government is also attacking the followers of Guru Nanak on the borders of Delhi and calling them Khalistanis. If there is any real intention of showing respect to Guru Nanak, the BJP should develop new monuments that can be named after him,” said Congress. “Also, there are so many other structures like hospitals and schools on the same Idgah Hills that can be named after the Guru but the fact is that it is not the government’s intention,” Congress Spokesman said while reacting to Rameshwar Sharma’s demand.
