First case under religious conversion law registered in Bareilly

Lucknow, Nov 29 Day after Uttar Pradesh ordinance aimed at curbing forcible or fraudulent religious conversions became law after getting the assent of Governor Anandiben Patel, a case under anti-love jihad law was registered at Deorania Police station of Bareilly on Sunday. The case registered under the newly-promulgated Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Ordinance, 2020, against a man who has been accused of forcing a woman to convert to Islam. The accused has been identified as Ubais. The accused of pressuring a woman to convert her religion is absconding. Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel had on Saturday promulgated the UP Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Ordinance 2020. This came after Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath Cabinet on November 24 cleared the Ordinance, proposing a maximum punishment of 10 years for "love jihad" related offenses. Under the law which deals with different categories of offenses, a marriage will be declared "null and void" if the conversion of a woman is solely for that purpose, and those wishing to change their religion after marriage need to apply to the district magistrate. The new law also has a provision under which if someone returns to their original religion, it shall not be deemed a conversion.
