The authorities should take a strong stance on the adverse effects of plastic on health and the environment and order ban on the sale of junk food in non-biodegradable packets.
the eatables should be sold only in bio-degradable packing although it might increase cost of products but it would be worth paying that extra money to protect environment and health of the children.
At a time when awareness and ban are in place for use of polythene bags and plastic items, the ban on the sale of junk food in non-biodegradable packets can also reduce indiscriminate use of plastic.
The health is linked to food habits and the packaging material need to be replaced from plastic to bio-degradable packaging and require much more effort to spread awareness on balanced food habits.
Talking to young Bites correspondent a group of social activists and environmentalists have demanded a blanket ban on the use of plastic bags by eateries to pack food and eatables keeping in view their adverse effects on health.
We The Human Forum, an NGO, has claimed that there was a direct link between rising cases of cancer and use of plastic bags for carrying eatables and the state should ban such practices.
“There is an upsurge in the number of cases related to serious ailments and this can be attributed to the practice of people consuming food, including hot curries, tea, milk and soups, packed and carried in polythene bags,” said Prem Singh, NGO spokesman. The practice was prevalent in several famous eateries not in old city of Jammu but specifically at Jain Bazar, Rehari, Janipur, Canal Road, Gandhi Nagar, Nai Basti and Bari Brahmana.
Talking to Young Bites correspondent Dr SS Sambyal said that the authorities should push for paper and corrugated fiberboard for packing and added that since transporting these products in paper-based packing over long distances would be difficult, the government would have to promote local production of items.
