Every year with rise in water level due to heavy rains across the river Tawi catchment, people living in the low lying areas have to live their life in fear. This year also fear of floods has gripped the residents in the areas , especially those residing in the low-lying areas.
Not only the people living near Tawi catchment are worried but there are several areas where people are living in fear as monsoon is approaching.
While most of the residents have started offering prayers too, as every year incessant rainfall and release of water from sewerage incurred heavy loss to the lives and property of people.
Talking to Young Bites correspondent residents of the low lying areas said that this is a matter of concern for us every year as we are living a life full of fear as soon as monsoon approaches, incessant rains increases the water level and in some cases flood like situation forces us to leave our houses leaving behind our cattle and household items.
Every time the authorities issue an alert we have sleepless nights because flood waters can enter into the houses of people living in low lying areas. People living by the riverbank said in the past also they had suffered losses to livestock and property.
"We are very worried about the losses. We have lost our cows and property in the past. Everywhere thing gets destroyed. Monsoon season is hard times for us” said another resident Abdul Qayoom.
Although the people along the low lying areas across river Tawi live their life normally but as soon as monsoon season approaches fear grips them, as heavy rains can lead to burst banks of river any time.
In the recent past in Jammu region, at least three persons, including a woman, were killed and nearly a dozen houses damaged in rain-related incidents, due to rain and nearly a dozen ‘kacha’ houses were also damaged, while 28 cattle perished.
