In our weekly section of Talk Show, today we have with us Dr Meenu Gupta, who is the chairperson of Sushila Devi Mirpur Cancer Welfare Society. The doctor is helping the poor and needy people who suffer from the dreadful disease. YoungBites correspondent Vikas Gupta talked about her achievements and her work. Here are the excerpts.
VG: You are amongst the renowned Cancer Specialist in India. How did you choose this profession?
MG: I have studied in a very small school in Bakshi Nagar. Due to the strong support of my parents I became a doctor. I did my MBBS from GMC Jammu and did my MD from SKIMS Srinagar. Then I moved to Anderson Cancer Centre Texas USA for advanced training in radiation Oncology including Proton Therapy.
VG: What are the achievements and awards you have received?
MG: I have received award for my research on geriatric cancer in Cancer Congress Conference in 2013. I was nominated twice for Bharat Jyoti Award2010 and 2017 and Global Chikitsa award 2017.
VG: What precautions should be taken by a common man to stay away from this dreadful disease?
MG: The main cancer causing agent is smoking. It is the main reason for mouth cancer. The junk food which is high in butter is the main reason of breast cancer. One should even stay away from the smokers because passive smokers are equally prone to cancer. Green vegetables, orange, lemon should be taken in a good quantity.
VG: Jammu has always seen deficiency of cancer doctors. What is your appeal to the govt of J&K on this issue?
MG: I appeal to the govt. to provide Bone Scan Machine in GMC Jammu. It is very important for the patients to find out the reason for the pain in their bones. The patients have to go to Punjab, Delhi to get their bones checked. It is a very small test but people are not provided with this basic facility.
VG: Where are you working right now? What kind of help you want to give to the people of Jammu?
MG: Presently I am the Chairperson of Radiotherapy Sushila Devi Mirpur Cancer Welfare Society Dehradun. Under this banner I mostly help the people who are below poverty line. For the people of Jammu I give free counseling on phone.
